A new resource kit for Primary Teachers 'Ribbons of Blue: In and Out of the Classroom' to be launched in February 2008.
'Ribbons of Blue: In and Out of the Classroom' is a new package of curriculum materials for Primary teachers. It is designed to complement the excursions and activities run by the Regional Coordinator with detailed lesson plans on a range of subjects related to the health of waterways, wetlands, groundwater and catchments. The materials were written to form a significant part of a teaching and learning program and are fully-linked to the Curriculum Framework, and include assessment tasks and associated rubrics.
The kit contains:
An introduction on curriculum planning
'Your Patch' background information on the regional catchment which includes waterways, history, land use and key issues
Further sections with Lesson Plans under the following headings:
Catchment
History
Landforms, Climate and Soil
Vegetation, Fauna and Macroinvertebrates
Land Use
Water Quality
Salinity
Groundwater
Stormwater
The kit is freely available to teachers through Professional Development workshops with Regional Coordinators. It is available as a hard copy file and on CD.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Hon. David Templeman is due to officially launch the kit on February 21, 2008 .

Water fleas (Cladocera) are tiny crustaceans, some species have large antennae which assist in swimming. Sometimes river pools in the south west have large populations of the giant cladoceran Daphnia carinata.
