Snapshot Events

Snapshot events aim to increase the awareness and understandings of the general community, including school students, in areas of environmental importance.

Ribbons of Blue/Waterwatch WA conducts two Snapshot events annually. The focus of the snapshot in May is salinity and the September snapshot focus is macroinvertebrates (water bugs!).

Salinity is a major environmental problem in WA that affects agricultural landscapes, groundwater and waterways. By participating in this snapshot schools and community groups not only collect data, but investigate the causes and consequences of this issue, as well as management options.

Macroinvertebrates are organisims that inhabit all types of waterways and are very useful indicators of the health of a particular waterway, as some species are very sensitive to pollutants and poor water quality, while others are tolerant of these.

Snapshots give us information about the particular situation, in a particular place, at a particular time. While not very detailed, snapshots can give an insight into the condition of the site at a given time. Sanpshots are often done as part of a larger Ribbons of Blue program that can include ongoing monitoring, educational activities and becoming involved in the management of a local waterbody.

Other Events

Each year Ribbons of Blue runs a range of events including competitions, 'confluences' and professional development workshops for teachers or training sessions for volunteers. See your Regional page for details of local events.
